10 January 2000
Steel stockholder and distributor, Austin Trumanns
Group (ATG), expects to double its work force in Ireland within
the next 18 months following the announcement today (10 January
2000) that it is to invest £1.5 million in a new operation
at Newry, County Down.
The new 62,000 sq.ft. steel stockholding and management facility
will employ 30 people at capacity and will be the Group’s
dedicated division for its activities throughout Northern Ireland
and Eire. Construction work is currently underway at the Newry
site and Austin Trumanns Ireland Ltd (ATI) will begin stockholding
operations from April 2000. ATI will retain stock levels of
6,000 tonnes including universal beams and columns, sheets,
hollow section, reversing mill plate and merchant bar.
Commenting on the development, Graeme Hill, managing director,
Austin Trumanns Group, explained, “We have experienced
a considerable upturn in business throughout Ireland. As a result
we believe that an investment on this scale is essential in
order to continue meeting our existing customer requirements
and expanding our service to new customers.
“We looked at a number of locations for the development
and we felt that Newry was ideally suited to meet our requirements.”
ATG’s existing employees at Belfast (6), Greenore (5)
and Dublin (6) will transfer to Newry.
ATG, a member of the Murray Metals Group of companies, is one
of the UK and Ireland’s leading steel stockholding and
distribution businesses. The company established its first Belfast
office in 1992 distributing strip products. The business expanded
into supplying general steels in 1994 when it opened its Dublin
and Greenore operations.
