GM Mining has pledged a sum of up to £100,000
for Greengairs community to be contained within a dedicated
Trust Fund following a meeting with Greengairs Community Council
on Thursday evening (03 February).
The pledge will run in line with extraction of coal from the
company’s site at Boglea in Greengairs and equate to approximately
30 pence per tonne of coal extracted.
GM Mining will provide a payment of £50,000 to a dedicated
trust on the commencement of coaling. Thereafter from the second
year of operation £12,000 will be paid annually for as
long as coal is extracted. It is anticipated that up to £100,000
will be contributed to the Trust.
At a meeting called by Greengairs Community Council, Donald
Wilson, a representative of GM Mining, stated, “I understand
that there was a previous undertaking and whilst we don’t
have a legal obligation to meet it, we believe we have a moral
obligation to do so. As such, we fully intend to meet the pledge
made by the previous owners of the site. GM Mining appreciates
that its activity in Greengairs should provide benefits for
the local community. It is our intention to work closely with
the community for as long as we have operations in the area
and we are looking forward to reviewing how our operations will
help support the community.”
